Through a new agreement between FOCUS St. Louis and the University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL), the university’s Center for Ethics in Public Life is being transformed into a community collaboration called the Public Ethics Partnership.

Dr. Wally Siewert will lead the Public Ethics Partnership as FOCUS’ Director of Civic Engagement. Before joining the FOCUS team in May 2017, Siewert served as Director of the Center for Ethics in Public Life for six years. He holds a Ph.D. in political philosophy and ethics from the University of California Santa Barbara.

Moving forward, the Public Ethics Partnership will continue to host the Public Ethics Conference on the UMSL campus. The sixth annual conference, to be held in early summer 2018, will focus on Ethics and Leadership in Political Parties. The Partnership will also host and partner on issues forums and discussions throughout the year.

“Ethics and leadership in government are a challenge for the St. Louis region, one which merits the best attentions of our brightest minds,” says Dr. Siewert. “For decades UMSL has educated many of our local government leaders, and FOCUS has provided civic leadership training across the region. This partnership brings two powerful community institutions together to focus on how government ought to work, and how we get there.”

The Center for Ethics in Public Life was originally founded at UMSL in 2006 with the mission of promoting ethical decision-making and personal integrity in the conduct of elected and appointed officials. The center’s programs have included an annual conference launched in 2012, workshops for political practitioners, research on best practices and a website to serve as a clearinghouse on the current state of public ethics in Missouri.

“FOCUS St. Louis has been instrumental in helping prepare leaders who work for the betterment of the St. Louis region for decades. It’s a vitally important organization and one of UMSL’s primary community partners,” UMSL Chancellor Tom George said. “We are delighted to be expanding that relationship in the area of public ethics – especially because of the involvement of Wally Siewert. He’s well known nationally and certainly on our campus as a leader in the field.”

Information on upcoming events of the Public Ethics Partnership will be posted to www.focus-stl.org. (Past research and conference information from the Center for Ethics in Public Life can be found at http://cepl.umsl.edu.)
