For better or worse, in the modern American political arena, money is a necessity. It is the fuel that translates political voices into action, bringing democracy to citizens' doorsteps. However, money is as dangerous as it is powerful. It can just as well fuel corruption, inequality and hyper-partisanship, thereby poisoning the democratic process.

The paradoxical duality of political money, as both necessary fuel and insidious corrupter, means neither side in the campaign finance debate has a simple answer. It also means elected officials have a very difficult balancing act to maintain.

This conference will bring together those who study political money, those who raise and spend it, and the press who cover it, for an honest conversation driven by experience and data, not partisan point-scoring. Two core questions will drive the discussion: If the current system is not perfect, then:

1) Is change possible and what should it look like?

2) How do elected officials, political operatives, political donors and citizens maintain ethical standards despite these imperfections?
