STL Leaders Speak Out

What qualities do you expect to see in a highly effective leader?

Well first of all, they should be effective communicators. That means they have got to communicate effectively on a one on one basis with folks, be able to engage people personally. In other words, those closest to them they should know things about their lives “How’s your family? How’s your daughter? Your son? How’s your pet?” They have to be able to represent their organization effectively in terms of communications. More broadly, to your internal organization, but also externally, being an external representative. They have got to understand the mission. Depending on the nature of the mission, they have to live the mission. They have to be a possible personification of the mission. So, communication is really very important.

They have got to be able to make the hard decisions and to the lead their organization sometimes through the hard decisions. Recently of course in the economy in the last couple of years, we have seen that. Right? We have seen the downward pressure in terms of budgets, resources that is required, reorganization of organizations. But it doesn’t have to be just budget, it can be the demands of a growing organization. It requires leaders to make hard decisions in terms of redirecting resources, in terms of personnel. So, leaders have to do the hard things, and not just the things that are easy and more enjoyable.-Martin Leifeld (1 min. 36 sec.)
