What qualities do you expect to see in a highly effective leader?
I think clear goals, sharp organizational skills, how to get to those goals, organize people to move forward towards that, but someone who, beyond sets their own goals, is able to state a vision and then cut that vision into smaller pieces that can be achieved, the goals.-Eric Miller (20 sec.)
Eric Miller, Senior Vice President and Director of Zoological Operations, Saint Louis Zoo, LSL Class of 2001-02
Eric Miller, DVM, is Senior Vice President and Director of Zoological Operations at the Saint Louis Zoo and Director of its WildCare Institute, the umbrella organization for the zoo’s conservation activities. He is a graduate of the Ohio State University (BS, DVM), and in 1981 came to the Saint Louis Zoo and the University of Missouri Columbia where he completed a residency in Zoo Animal Medicine.
Eric has served as the President of American College of Zoological Medicine and the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians. In 2003, he received their Dolensek Award for “exceptional contributions to the conservation, care and understanding of zoo and free-ranging wildlife.” He has served on the Board of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association. He has authored/co-authored 60+ scientific articles and textbook chapters, and with Dr. Murray Fowler, he has served as Co-Editor of the 4th, 5th and 6th editions of Zoo and Wild Animal Medicine. He has worked on biomedical surveys of captive South China tigers and giant pandas, and free-ranging Galapagos avifauna.
