Every year, the FOCUS St. Louis® What's Right with the Region! awards ceremony recognizes 20 individuals, organizations, or initiatives that have a positive and significant impact on the St. Louis region. Four honorees are chosen in each of the five following categories:
- Creating Quality Educational Opportunities
- Demonstrating Innovative Solutions
- Fostering Regional Cooperation
- Improving Racial Equality and Social Justice
- Promoting Stronger Communities
This week, we'd like to introduce you to the honorees who will be recognized for Fostering Regional Cooperation.
Healthy Eating with Local Produce
The Healthy Eating with Local Produce program is a partnership/collaboration among several organizations—food from local farms (Missouri Farmers Union) is delivered (Sappington Farmers Market) to a new food center (Saint Louis University) where dieticians and chefs clean and prepare foods to deliver to the students (Maplewood Richmond Heights School Districts). This program has multiple benefits for our region—local farmers have a guaranteed buyer for certain produce, students at SLU are gaining valuable knowledge about food preparation and health, and students at MRH School Districts are eating healthier and learning the importance of knowing the origin of their food. With this program, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom doors—the learning experience extends to even the cafeteria.
Midwest China Hub
Since the opening of the American West, St. Louis has long been revered as the Gateway to the West. The Midwest China Hub plays the same role with an international twist—developing the St. Louis-China relationship to build up an air cargo hub, here in our region, establishing us as the Gateway to the Far East. This commission represents one of the first major regional attempts to respond to expanding, globalized markets beyond city borders and create new markets for St. Louis and Midwestern goods and services. The result is increased exports of Midwestern products to China and creation of new jobs and opportunities for Missouri companies, producers, and workers. The Midwest China Hub responds to global challenges in the 21st century, making the St. Louis and Missouri region major players in the global market.
Peter & Paul Community Services
Peter & Paul Community Services was started in 1981 by the historic Sts. Peter & Paul Parish to serve as an additional shelter for those in need. From these beginnings in the basement of the parish hall, staffed by volunteers and able to accommodate only 20 people, the organization has expanded to include the efforts of Trinity Lutheran Church and St. Vincent de Paul and serves the homeless population in a greater way than solely providing shelter. Meals, a transitional housing program, and a care center for people who require live-in assistance now also fall within the realm of Peter & Paul’s services. The Positive Directions Program is one of the more unique and impactful initiatives of the organization, providing targeted supportive services to pinpoint and address what might be the root of the problem—whether it be mental illness, substance abuse, or HIV. Peter & Paul actively helps the homeless, as well as those who are at risk of becoming homeless, transition into meaningful, new lives.
St. Louis Healthy Families
At the center of any strong community are strong families. And while it can be argued that single-parent families are viable members of a community, St. Louis Healthy Families attests that having both parents together and happy provides the best means of support for the children, and in turn, the greater community. SLHF has initiated community-wide classes designed to build skills in money management, communications, child-rearing, and conflict resolution, which are the four areas that rank repeatedly in research as top trouble spots in a failing marriage. With dozens of cooperating agencies, SLHF trains people in how to half the often disastrous consequences of broken homes. To SLHF, improving marriage and families is more than one single goal. The hope is that eventually, new interpersonal relationship skills will strengthen neighborhoods, subdivisions, towns, and cities—and in turn, the entire region.
