How many times have you heard the quote by Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”? I’ve heard it more times than I can remember, but the truth is, as redundant as it may be, people still look to others to enact change. You can’t depend on the government, for example, to make whatever problem you see their top priority, then get mad or discouraged when it’s not resolved. It’s true that the government’s leadership is needed; it’s not always the most reliable. The fact is everyone, all of us little people, have to start being leaders ourselves. If there is an issue you think needs to be looked at, take the initiative and let your voice be heard. It’s your civic duty. There may even be an established organization that already has your concern as their focus. With a little research, anyone can find the resources to solve a problem, and influence and educate others. You should start by looking at where you spend most of your time, then talk to others about the issue that’s close to you; it’s easier to influence those around you, and they may even feel the same. Tell us how you’re making a difference, or how you are standing up for something you believe in.
