There is good news and bad news for supporters of green energy in this morning’s (6/11/09)St. Louis Post-Dispatch. A report by The Associated Press claims bill in the House and Senate are going to fall far short of President Barack Obama’s high expectations for green energy. He proposed the nation produce one quarter of its energy through renewable sources by 2025. Critics of the bills currently floating around Capitol Hill claim the strictest would require only a little more than 9 percent of energy come from renewable sources when you account for all of the compromises and back door outs.
If we’re going to make any real progress in converting to green energy, we need to not back down from strict guidelines, but enforce them.
One the other hand, another AP article claims the green energy industry is surviving the recession and is poised to grow when the economy recovers. Statistics from a Pew Charitable Trusts study found the number of green energy jobs grew more than 9 percent from 1998 to 2007. Michigan alone saw a 10.7 percent increase.
This is heartening news. The increasing number of jobs proves an increase in demand and hopefully shows a trend that will continue. It shows that enough people realize how important green energy is and they are actively making a change. That is hope for the future.
