Community Conversations
The Emerging Leaders program offers a select group of St. Louis’ young and talented the opportunity to receive training to develop leadership and management skills. This program provides participants with an increased sense of engagement in the region, as well as the tools to take an active role as the next generation of St. Louis regional leaders. The Emerging Leaders program is open to young professionals ages 22-35.
The program is held twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. Emerging Leaders consists of six sessions held on a weekday (appoximately two per month). The fall program will be held from September through November 2013. The sessions are held from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the FOCUS St. Louis office. The cost for the Emerging Leaders program is $500 and includes a light dinner and parking as well as a yearlong FOCUS St. Louis membership.
Emerging Leaders aims to provide young professionals a better understanding of the inner workings of the St. Louis community, an opportunity to develop leadership skills, a chance for personal growth and self-assessment, exposure to volunteer involvements, and a diverse network of peers. As a member of FOCUS St. Louis, program participants get connected to other leadership program alumni and have valuable opportunities to attend FOCUS programs and events.
Topics include the following:
Who am I? This covers an in-depth analysis of each participant’s personality type and a chance to practice interpersonal communication based on preference. This knowledge of personality types also gives practical applications for more effective networking, relationship-building for colleagues, and strengthening leadership skills.
What do others think of me? This topic covers everything from “relationship rituals” (a mix of business etiquette and pointers) to personal branding. In this high-tech world, personal branding does not just include first impressions and professional behavior, but online presence and personality. How does St. Louis work? The St. Louis region has a unique landscape, both geographically and politically. This topic will cover some of the intricacies ot St. Louis and current hot topics. What will I do? This session aims to provide structure for identifying passion and interests, giving participants an understanding of ways to pursue these aspirations while advancing their career.
General leadership skills Skill-building will be built into many of the sessions, including practice giving a personal pitch and constructive feedback, techniques for leading better meetings, and public presentation skills.
Assignments will be given between sessions to foster a deeper understanding of program content
